In this republic, our constitution has provided all citizens the right to bear arms. In establishing this country, the founders put together our Bill of Rights. As we all know, this bill contains our most precious rights as American citizens, and we can read the following in the bill of rights: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The right to own and use firearms was a major priority to the founders, as they saw that if all citizens could have access to firearms they would be able to defend their country, family, and themselves. One could stand up to tyranny through the power of their arms, and protect their freedom.
Many are now seeking to destroy the right to bear arms, which the founders established in order to ensure our ability to protect ourselves. We can not eradicate the second amendment, for it is crucial that we have freedom to own and carry weapons in this nation. We will now see why the founders established this right and why we must fight to secure it.
The founding Fathers of America wanted this country to prosper and last, for they knew that at some time in the life of a nation, tyranny would besiege it. “Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms [of government] those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”-Thomas Jefferson. It was the founders goal to warn us as well as give us the very tools to fight against tyranny. One of the major tools that they left us was the second amendment which enables Americans to arm themselves.
“The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”– Thomas Jefferson.
“The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.” -Alexander Hamilton.
The founders provided Americans this right because they wanted their country to prosper. Our country needed and still needs individual citizens to own arms, for it is a crucial way to prevent tyranny. Our country has a federal government which unites all the states, along with a strong military. These things are essential for the wellbeing of our republic. At the same time however, our wise founders saw that these two powers might get out of hand and have the potential to become tyrannical. They therefore instituted the second amendment, so that if needed the people could rise up with their personal arms and resist a power grabbing government. We should know that it is our duty to stand up against a tyrannical establishment. The founders had seen how greedy monarchs used a strong government to subdue their subjects. The common poor peasant had no arms and in no way could rise up in defense of his liberty. Americans would not be left to face the same end. If a majority of citizens bond together, and take up arms, who would be able to stop them? American citizens should want their federal government to have a check on its own authority every now and then. The liberals of our country continuously push to ban guns, or pass laws that hinder the right of a citizen to buy or own guns. This move means that they do not want the people of this nation to be able to check a powerful government. It is essential that we continue to scrutinize our governing forces and remind them that we the people hold the true power. “When the government takes away citizens’ right to bear arms it becomes a citizen’s duty to take away the government’s right to govern.” –George Washington. It is not just a “right” to bear arms, it can also be seen as a duty to bear them. In countries where firearms are illegal for individuals to own, their government can take complete control over them. In countries where one can legally own guns, their citizens experience greater freedom. We should remember that one major reason that the colonists took arms against England and started to assemble themselves in fighting bodies, was that governor Thomas Gage began to assault their arsinals which contained not only their firearms, but also their ammunition.
“Both oligarchs and tyrants mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms.” -Aristotle.
“ When the history of the twentieth century is finally written, one of its key features will be the wanton slaughter of more than 170 million people, not in war but in their own government. The governments that lead in this slaughter are the former USSR (65 million) and the People’s Republic of China (35-40 million). The point to remember is that these governments were the idols of America’s leftists. Part of the reason for these and other tyrannical success was because the people were first disarmed.” -Walter E. Williams.
Williams underlines the danger when a government disarms its people, which should show us how important guns are in defending our freedom.
We should all know that the United States government has absolutely no right to ban guns. “To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.” -Thomas Jefferson. Will we allow our government to override our constitution? I hope not. “The Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms.” -Samuel Adams. Are we willing to fight for this right which holds tyranny at bay? By owning firearms we not only protect our freedom but defy tyranny.
“No free man shall ever be debarred from the use of arms.” – Thomas Jefferson
“The people are nor to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full possession of them.” -Zachariah Johnson,
“The right of the people to keep and bear…arms shall not be infringed…it is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”-James Madison.
Many people are now boldly asserting that we need to get rid of all guns. To begin with, this idea is absurd because one would first have to go against the constitution, and then force his fellow citizen to give up his firearm. But let’s say that guns somehow we’re finally banned and that all people in America were forced to give up their arms. It would be a disaster, for we not only have arms to fight against tyranny, but to also protect our families and fellow citizens. “Arms in the hands of citizens [may] be used at individual discretion… in private self-defense… ”-John Adams. As citizens of America it is our duty to safeguard not just ourselves, but our fellow countrymen. So when a person carries a gun they are protecting not just themselves but all of society. Some say “let the police be the ones to carry guns’ ‘, but when only cops have guns it is called a police state. There was a study done that showed that from the time you call the police to the moment when they actually arrive, is, on average, sixteen minutes. Would one not rather be a responsible gun owner and be able to protect his family? If there is a person who has ill intentions and threatens you or your family, you must have a way to defend yourself, or else when the cops arrive in sixteen minutes the crime will have already been committed. Responsively owning a gun is in many situations the only way you can protect your family. I am sure that if any anti-gun person’s life was threatened they would sincerely wish that they had a gun to protect themselves in the crucial moment.
The importance of the second amendment was that it gave people a way to fight against tyranny, but at the same time to also protect the individual right to life, liberty and property. We should remember that we have a right to firearms so that we may protect ourselves and others.
The anti-gun philosophy is somewhat simple. People are sad and upset about the numerous school shootings, store shootings, and other random gun violence. They see that there is a problem that must be fixed and are looking for a way to put a stop to all this horrific needless death. Many people somewhat naturally come to the conclusion that since the perpetrators committing these crimes are all using guns, they must admonish the second amendment rights and take away all guns from Americans, therefore putting an end to the ill usage of firearms. Many Americans have been so scarred by gun violence that they no longer can think in a rational manner when it comes to firearms. One has to go to the heart of the matter and find out what is really causing this widespread murder. It’s not the gun that commits the crime, it is the person. “A sword is never a killer, it is a tool in the killer’s hand.” We therefore need to find a way to stop the killer’s hand. Many liberals claim that if guns were illegal criminals would not be able to carry out their acts of brutality. Well all they must do is look at history and see that there have been murders from the beginning of time. There have always been means to carry out homicides and there always will be. Innocent people have died horrific deaths from heartless humans since the existence of humans. It is absurd to think that if firearms were outlawed, all the small and large scale slaughter would come to an end. These killings have nothing to do with guns, but with the people who use guns with an ill intent. If people destroyed every gun in the world, there would still be violent deaths. If democrats really want to halt all these needless deaths they would not campaign to ban firearms. They are not aware of the fact that they must campaign against criminals in order to halt the unsafe usage of firearms. Our country has a system which if it were run correctly would put a stop to a certain amount of this violence. We have thousands of law enforcement officers along with many jails that are ready to be used. Most average members of the liberal left are people who genuinely want to stop gun violence. But,first of all, they remain blind to the fact that guns are not responsible for this pointless bloodshed. Second of all, the elites of the left are threatened by citizens owning arms, so they in a crafty manner convince people that if the right to bear arms were abolished peace would reign and all the fierce homicides would come to a close. The founders gave us one of the most just governments. We must all assist in exercising this justice on those who are truly guilty of murder, if we wish to do our best in ending this routhlessness we must hunt after and seek the criminals.“It’s a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not phased by gun controllers. I happen to know this from personal experience…You won’t get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There’s only one way to get real gun control: disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up, and if you don’t actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time.” -Ronald Reagan.
We have seen how those who seek to ban guns are blinded, and do not know that when they support banning guns they are really dissolving American citizens rights. The truth of the matter is that even if guns were outlawed, criminals would still have their firearms. Those who violently use guns are breaking the law, and if guns were to be prohibited in America, what would stop the criminals from breaking the law again and owning a gun? Nothing! This law would only deprive the law-abiding citizens of their tools for defense. These law abiding citizens are not the ones commiting the murders it is the criminals. “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms … disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.”-Thomas Jeferson. We should clearly see that we can not give up our right to firearms for anything, especially safety, for it will only make this country more dangerous.
In conclusion, to all those that love liberty, and this republic, stand fast and keep a firm hold on your arms, for we keep them to do battle against tyranny and to protect our nation’s citizens. We must let no person in any way seek to abolish this constitutional right.
“A man’s rights rest in three boxes: the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box.” -Fredric Douglas.
